Israeli Football Broadcasts Need Honest Criticism, Not Empty Patriotism

מאת גיא לייבה

The story · English

Returning from the World Cup to the Israeli Premier League is a stark contrast, akin to leaving Disneyland for a local water park. Despite this, Israeli football broadcasts often resort to clichés like "It may not be the best, but it's ours" and "How we missed the Premier League," which do not reflect the true sentiment of fans during the World Cup. The league is widely recognized as mediocre, and this should not be a source of shame but an accepted reality.

The problem arises when broadcasters and commentators try to shield the league from criticism by framing it as a beloved but flawed entity that must be embraced unconditionally. This approach stifles honest journalism and allows the league to continue operating without accountability. For example, no commentator would excuse a match delayed by 40 minutes due to security failures or justify high ticket prices in outdated stadiums by invoking "our league".

The real issue in Israeli football broadcasting is a lack of courage to confront problems openly. Commentators and analysts often avoid criticism to maintain good relations with players, coaches, agents, and fans, and to avoid backlash on social media. This results in forced positivity and a reluctance to acknowledge poor performances or organizational failures.

The article calls to remember the late Meir Einstein, a respected sports broadcaster who was known for his passionate and honest commentary. Einstein did not shy away from calling out bad games, embarrassing management, or poor fan behavior. He understood that sports broadcasting is a journalistic task that requires truthfulness, not just enthusiasm.

Honest coverage should include acknowledging when games are dull, when teams perform poorly, and when incidents like flares on the pitch occur repeatedly. Broadcasters should question who is responsible for ongoing problems and what changes are needed. Above all, they should respect viewers by providing truthful, critical, and courageous commentary rather than empty slogans.
