Israel Expands Local Energy Transition Program to 20 More Municipalities

Israel's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced on Monday that it is expanding its flagship “Accelerator” program to 20 local authorities. The initiative helps municipalities build action plans for a shift to sustainable energy, with professional guidance, consulting and dedicated tools.

Under the program, participating authorities will receive expert support to advance renewable energy, improve energy efficiency and promote electric transport. The ministry said the goals are to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create new economic growth engines, prepare for climate change, and increase renewable energy generation by 2030. This year’s round will also place special emphasis on involving communities and residents in the planning process.

Energy and Infrastructure Minister Eli Cohen said the program is “a significant step in realizing ambitious national goals for the transition to sustainable energy and the reduction of emissions and air pollution in the energy sector,” adding that it strengthens cooperation between the government and local authorities, and between municipalities and their residents.

According to the ministry, about 60 local authorities and regional councils have taken part in the first three rounds of the program so far, affecting more than 4.7 million residents. The 20 new participants represent more than 735,000 residents and broaden the program’s reach across the country, from the Golan to Tel שבע.
