Rabbi Yona Goodman Urges Parents to Balance Torah Study with Effort and Perseverance in Child Education

מאת הרב יונה גודמן

The story · English

In the first episode of a new video series on Channel 7, Rabbi Yona Goodman addresses the core values essential in educating children today. He highlights a significant gap between what parents seek when choosing a yeshiva or ulpana and the challenges they face during their children's studies. Initially, many parents prioritize a strong Torah environment with abundant religious classes, but later become concerned with issues like responsibility, effort, and perseverance.

Rabbi Goodman suggests parents recognize two main educational goals: one religious and the other humanistic. While the religious goal focuses on Torah study, the humanistic goal emphasizes teaching children diligence, persistence, and sensitivity. He explains that these qualities not only support personal development but also enhance religious learning, as a willingness to work hard can be directed toward Torah study.

Furthermore, Rabbi Goodman notes that these goals influence each other, including character development. He states that cultivating a readiness to embrace effort naturally leads to working on one’s character traits. He concludes that these aspects nourish one another, and alongside religious aims, parents should also prioritize the humanistic goal, which fundamentally shapes life itself.
