Haifa Mayor Warns of Declining IDF Officer Standards Amid Education Violence Crisis

The annual preparation conference for the upcoming school year, organized by the Association of Education Department Directors in Local Authorities, opened Thursday at Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa, focusing on the growing violence in the education system. The event was notably held without the Minister of Education, Yoav Kisch, who was on vacation, disappointing many attendees.

Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav, hosting the conference and recipient of the 2023 Education Award, emphasized the urgent need to address student boredom by implementing dramatic changes in curricula. He warned that the decline in discipline and standards is already visible among IDF officers, stating, "This should deeply concern us, and there are no alternatives." Yahav stressed that without continuous reform, the situation will deteriorate further.

Meir Shimoni, Director General of the Ministry of Education, described the fight against violence as a struggle over the character of society and education, advocating for a safe and respectful environment for children. Meanwhile, Haim Bibas, Chairman of the Local Government Center and Mayor of Modiin, criticized the handling of special education, blaming various stakeholders for turning it into an overwhelming burden and calling for renewed management after October 27 to prevent system collapse.

In response, Teachers' Union Secretary General Yaffa Ben-David warned that the Special Education Law would damage the system for generations, advocating for professional discretion in placing children and highlighting shortages of aides and qualified teachers. She called for reducing class sizes and increasing cooperation among parents, teachers, and authorities to tackle violence effectively.

Police Superintendent Yuval Revivo, head of the Youth Department in the Israel Police, noted that while fewer juvenile cases are opened, this reflects insufficient engagement with youth rather than a drop in crime. He highlighted a recent three-week police initiative focused on youth following a high-profile murder and pointed out a significant shortage of officers amid ongoing challenges.
