How to Properly Clean Your Refrigerator to Prevent Food Contamination

מאת אפרת ברינר

The story · English

Regular and thorough cleaning of the refrigerator is essential to prevent the buildup of dirt, unpleasant odors, and food contamination. Experts recommend starting by emptying the fridge, discarding expired or unsafe food items, and checking open packages and leftovers. Per the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), perishable foods should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours, and during hot weather, this time is even shorter. To maintain food safety during cleaning, sensitive items can be temporarily stored in a cooler with ice.

After emptying, removable shelves and drawers should be taken out and washed with warm soapy water, then dried completely before reinsertion. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises washing these parts thoroughly, especially after spills or recalled products. The fridge’s interior surfaces, including walls, bottom, rails, and areas under drawers, should be wiped with soap and water, avoiding harsh chemicals unless disinfecting is necessary. Door gaskets, which often accumulate crumbs and liquids, require gentle cleaning and drying to maintain proper sealing and temperature control.

Cleaning should also extend to the exterior, including wiping down bottle and container exteriors to prevent reintroducing dirt, and regularly disinfecting the door handle, which is frequently touched. Before restocking, ensure all parts are dry and organize food so older items remain visible. Raw meats should be stored in sealed containers to prevent cross-contamination. Maintaining the refrigerator temperature at or below 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) and the freezer at -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit) is crucial for food safety, with a thermometer recommended to monitor this.

Promptly cleaning spills, especially from raw meat juices, is vital to avoid bacterial spread. The CDC emphasizes cleaning areas exposed to recalled products thoroughly. Overall, cleaning the refrigerator is not just about aesthetics but a critical step in food safety, requiring a systematic approach: empty, sort, wash removable parts, wipe interior, dry, and reorganize. Regular spot cleaning and temperature checks help maintain a safe and clean environment for food storage.
