Rabbi Israel Reider Highlights Positive Reinforcement in Parenting from Weekly Torah Portion

The story · English

In his special commentary on the weekly Torah portion Ki Tetze, Rabbi Israel Reider discusses the lesson derived from the biblical passage about the rebellious son (ben sorer umoreh). The Talmud states that such a son never actually existed and is a parable meant to teach a deeper educational message. Rabbi Reider cites the Admor of Klausenburg's unique interpretation, suggesting that the passage can be read as describing a child who generally listens to his parents yet still faces correction for shortcomings.

This interpretation emphasizes that parents often focus primarily on what their children lack or need to improve, even when the child is fundamentally good and obedient. Rabbi Reider stresses that education should begin with recognizing and encouraging the child's positive behaviors rather than concentrating mainly on criticism. He advocates for praising children for their good deeds as much as, or more than, pointing out faults.

The rabbi concludes by expressing hope that parents will educate with love, encouragement, and trust, fostering genuine satisfaction and pride in their children’s growth. This approach aligns with the Torah’s teaching that true education is rooted in affirming the good before addressing the negative.
