Israeli Company Secures $50 Million US Contract for Suicide Drones

The Israeli company Uvision, in partnership with the American firm Mistral, has won a new contract worth over $50 million to supply the US military with the Hero 120 suicide drone. This drone has a maximum range of 40 to 60 kilometers and can operate for about an hour. It can be equipped with various warheads designed to target armored vehicles or personnel. This deal follows a previous multi-year contract signed in October last year valued at $982 million for supplying similar loitering munitions.

Uvision operates an American subsidiary, while Mistral, based in Maryland, specializes in integrating defense systems within the US. Uvision is globally recognized and collaborates with companies like Germany's Rheinmetall, with whom it developed a container-launch system for suicide drones. This innovative launch platform supports swarm attacks by enabling multiple drones to be deployed simultaneously and offers flexibility and concealment advantages.

Separately, the United Arab Emirates is expanding its deployment of American THAAD air defense systems to counter Iranian threats. Currently operating two THAAD batteries, the UAE plans to add a third, integrating it with existing AN/TPY-2 radars. Lockheed Martin reports the contract value with the UAE has increased from $211 million to over $1 billion through 2031. The US Missile Defense Agency manages this project and will upgrade software and hardware components.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has creatively converted Chinese civilian aircraft into loitering munitions amid its conflict with Russia. Ukrainian engineers adapted the Mugin-5 Pro drone to carry explosives, producing a cost-effective weapon with a 500-kilometer range and 25-kilogram warhead. They also developed the Mutch 2000, capable of striking targets up to 2,000 kilometers away, based on Chinese airframes. In response, China restricted direct drone exports to Ukraine in mid-2023, but Ukrainian developers have sourced airframes directly from Chinese manufacturers, ironically resembling Iranian Shahed drones used by Russia.

These developments highlight ongoing innovations and strategic shifts in drone warfare and air defense systems across multiple countries.
