Israel's Strategic Role in IMEC Trade Corridor Faces Setbacks Amid Middle East Conflicts

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

The IMEC trade corridor, designed to connect India and Europe via Israel, has been delayed by ongoing Middle East conflicts but remains a critical strategic-economic project for Israel. The corridor aims to transform Haifa into a major logistics hub, integrating Israeli technological strengths in AI, cyber, semiconductors, water desalination, and energy into supply chains stretching from Bangalore to Berlin. Despite the wars in Gaza, Lebanon, and broader regional instability freezing progress, these conflicts have underscored the corridor's necessity as an alternative to vulnerable maritime routes like the Suez Canal.

Research indicates that completing IMEC could reduce shipping times between India and Europe by up to 40% and cut logistics costs by about 30%, saving approximately $2.7 billion annually even at modest container volumes. Beyond cost savings, the corridor is expected to foster ecosystems in AI, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and venture capital across three continents. For Israel, IMEC represents more than transit fees; it could embed the country at the heart of a new physical and digital economic architecture linking Asia and Europe.

The project’s original route was planned through Saudi Arabia and Jordan into Israel, bypassing unstable countries like Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. However, the outbreak of war following Hamas’s October 7 attack and the resulting regional tensions, including Saudi Arabia’s withdrawal from normalization talks with Israel, have stalled progress. This delay risks losing Israel’s geographic advantage if alternative routes through Syria or other countries stabilize and develop first.

Experts emphasize that IMEC should be viewed as the backbone of a new economic system, akin to trade arteries that transformed cities like Singapore and Rotterdam. The corridor’s success depends on political stability and regional cooperation, particularly normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which would connect Asia’s fastest-growing economy with Europe’s largest integrated market. Israel’s current government has been criticized for lacking a coordinated national effort to secure Israel’s role in this emerging economic framework.

As conflicts continue, the strategic and commercial potential of IMEC remains compressed, awaiting favorable political conditions. The project’s economic rationale grows stronger amid disruptions in key maritime chokepoints, highlighting the urgent need to diversify trade routes. Ultimately, IMEC could anchor Israel firmly within the economic architecture linking Europe, the Gulf, and India, with Europe serving as Israel’s economic anchor and Israel acting as a bridge to the East.
