First Israeli Bedouin Judge Requests Transfer North Due to Crime Threats in South

The story · English

Nasser Abu Taha, Israel's first Bedouin judge, has requested to transfer his judicial duties from southern Israel to the north following threats and a hostile atmosphere from criminal elements within the Arab community. The threats reportedly stem from suspects and defendants he has sentenced over the years, who blame him for their punishments and the resulting harm, even demanding compensation from his family. This move is considered unprecedented and directly linked to the security concerns and environment surrounding him in the south. The Courts Administration declined to comment on the matter. Abu Taha was appointed as a judge in 2002 after being selected by the Judicial Appointments Committee at the Ministry of Justice, becoming the first Bedouin judge in Israel. He completed his law studies in Italy and was the first Arab to serve as a senior prosecutor in the Southern District Prosecutor's Office for seven years.
