Hamas-Linked Killings Spark Chaos and Revenge Threats in Gaza's Abu Warda Clan

The story · English

A series of internal killings linked to Hamas militants has shaken Gaza, igniting anger and calls for revenge within the Abu Warda clan. On August 19, masked gunmen reportedly affiliated with Hamas’s military wing fatally shot Hassan and Wasim Abu Warda in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City. Two others from the clan were also wounded. The victims were part of a local group operating in Jabalia, which had reportedly clashed with Hamas over influence and accusations of theft, looting, and exploiting humanitarian aid during the recent conflict.

The dispute escalated as the local group gained autonomy, prompting Hamas’s military leadership to allegedly order the elimination of four members, including the two killed. The killings provoked outrage among the Abu Warda family, with mourners at Wasim’s funeral shouting “Death to the murderers” and demanding accountability. Clan leaders accused Hamas of killing 15 family members recently without cause and warned they might take justice into their own hands if no action is taken against the perpetrators.

Hamas’s Interior Ministry stated that gunmen were arrested and an investigation is underway. However, the incident reflects broader internal disorder in Gaza, where Hamas has been trying to maintain control amid rising armed conflicts with local clans. During the war, Israel reportedly armed and supported clans opposing Hamas to weaken its rule, but this strategy failed on the ground. Hamas views these groups as collaborators with Israel and has repeatedly cracked down on them to reassert dominance.

The recent violence has sparked debate on Gaza’s social media, with some suggesting Hamas orchestrated the killings to justify disarming the clans and presenting their weapons as Hamas’s own. The situation underscores the fragile and volatile security environment in Gaza as Hamas struggles to consolidate power amid internal rivalries and external pressures.
