Jewish Prayer Standardized After a Millennium Through One Letter from Spain

מאת כיכר השבת, ראובן שטיין

The story · English

For nearly a thousand years, Jewish prayer was transmitted orally without a fixed text or uniform version across communities. This changed in the ninth century when a letter from the Jewish community in Barcelona, Spain, requested a complete written prayer order for the entire year. The response came from Rav Amram Gaon, head of the Sura yeshiva in Babylonia, who compiled the first siddur (prayer book), setting a standardized format that influenced Jewish prayer worldwide for generations.

Before this, prayer was considered "Torah she-be'al peh" (oral Torah) and was memorized and recited by the prayer leader (chazan) from memory, as writing prayers was seen as akin to "burning the Torah." The chazan was essentially the living siddur, responsible for recalling the entire liturgy, including weekday, Sabbath, and festival prayers. Communities relied on hearing and responding rather than reading from a text.

The origins of Jewish prayer trace back to the Men of the Great Assembly in the early Second Temple period, who established blessings and the Amidah prayer. However, the exact wording was flexible, varying by community and generation. This oral tradition led to diverse customs and versions, especially between Babylonia and the Land of Israel.

Rav Amram Gaon's siddur, created in response to the Barcelona community's request, included prayers, blessings, laws, and customs, drawing from the Babylonian Talmud and local practices. It became the foundational template for all subsequent siddurim, spreading through North Africa, Israel, and Europe, influencing Ashkenazi and Sephardi rites alike.

The creation of a written siddur preserved the prayers but also introduced debates over textual variations and permissible changes, sparking ongoing discussions about prayer versions that continue today. The siddur's emergence marked a pivotal shift from oral transmission to fixed text, ensuring continuity but also formalizing liturgical differences across Jewish communities.
