Six Satellite-Tagged Hawksbill Sea Turtles Released into Red Sea Near Eilat
Six female hawksbill sea turtles equipped with advanced satellite transmitters were released this week into the Coral Beach Nature Reserve near Eilat. The turtles hatched and were raised at the Underwater Observatory Marine Park in Eilat before being transferred by the park and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority (INPA). After rigorous medical examinations confirmed their fertility and health, the turtles were deemed fit for reintroduction into the wild.
This release is part of a long-term conservation project by the Underwater Observatory Marine Park, which has returned over 200 turtles to the sea since its inception. Two years ago, three satellite-tagged turtles were introduced to the Gulf of Eilat to monitor their adaptation. Positive tracking data from those turtles, named Nova, Yael, and Israel, showed normal behavior and successful acclimatization, providing valuable insights into their natural movement patterns.
Before releasing the new group, a team of INPA experts, including Dr. Yaniv Levy, Dr. Tomer Nisimian, and Dr. Noam Lider, conducted advanced CT scans and biochemical tests to rule out diseases that could threaten the wild population. The turtles, named Maurice, Shonet, Arava, Eilat, Amit, and Ilai, are about 30 years old, with some currently gravid. The project aims to monitor their survival and contribute to the recovery of the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles, which are found only in the Gulf of Eilat in Israel.
Dr. Levy emphasized the importance of this initiative for tracking the turtles’ survival and sharing their journey with the public. Aviv Levy, the scientific director of the Underwater Observatory, highlighted that the turtles were raised in conditions simulating the Gulf of Eilat and that the satellite tracking will provide crucial global data on optimal growth conditions and conservation methods. The project supports biodiversity and ecosystem stability in the Red Sea region, where human activity has severely impacted sea turtle populations worldwide.
The satellite monitoring will enhance understanding of the turtles’ migration routes, habitats, and threats, aiding in the development of more effective conservation strategies along the Gulf of Eilat and the Red Sea.
