Monica Levi, Original Inspiration for Monica Sex Band, Passes Away After Illness

Monica Levi, a musician who played bass in the early lineup of the Haifa punk-rock band Killer Hot, died on Monday morning after a four-year battle with a serious illness. Known in the early 1980s by the nickname "Monica Sex," she inspired the name of the famous Israeli band Monica Sex. She is survived by her husband Meir Levi, two sons, and six grandchildren.

Levi was born Monica Friedman in Romania and immigrated to Israel at age six, growing up in Beersheba. During her military service, she worked as an investigator in the military police, where she met Meir Levi, then commander of the Southern Military Police Investigations Unit. Through this connection, she met Yoram Mark-Reich and Yaron Dekel, founders of Killer Hot. Mark-Reich gave her the nickname "Monica Sex" due to her striking beauty, a name later adopted by Yehli Sobol and his band.

Killer Hot was founded in Haifa in 1976 but paused during the founders' military service. When they resumed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Monica joined the band, which blended punk, glam, and rock styles that were uncommon in Israel at the time. Their 1981 satirical political song "I Want to Be Prime Minister," written by Mark-Reich, gained significant radio play during the 10th Knesset elections. Monica left the band after marrying Meir Levi and becoming pregnant, with the band recording a farewell song titled "The Night Has Not Passed Yet" in her honor.

Mark-Reich recalled Monica's enduring beauty and spirit, noting her fight against illness over the past four years. He confirmed her passing while communicating with her husband at Hadassah Hospital. Monica Levi's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Omer Cemetery.
