Union of Yeshiva Students Publishes New Volume Showcasing Top Torah Essays

The story · English

The Union of Yeshiva Students recently celebrated the release of their new book "Talmudo Beyado," which compiles the finest Torah essays (chaburot) written by yeshiva students across Israel over the past year. The project culminated in a meeting with Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, head of the Union and a leading Torah authority, where the new volume and the extensive selection process were presented.

Nearly 5,000 essays were submitted this year, an unusually high number that required division among teams of scholars and examiners who reviewed the works over several months. From this pool, 75 outstanding essays were chosen for publication. The essays covered complex Talmudic topics, including intricate discussions from the Pesachim tractate, and demonstrated a range of approaches from comprehensive summaries to original insights.

A key discussion during the meeting focused on how to fairly evaluate these Torah essays. The Union leaders debated whether to prioritize original insights or the ability to thoroughly organize and present the topic according to classical commentaries. Rabbi Hirsch suggested a weighted scoring system, for example assigning 10% to innovation, 40% to arrangement of classical sources, and 40% to topic scope, while allowing flexibility depending on the essay's style.

They also addressed essays that leaned more toward halachic rulings rather than traditional yeshiva study formats, agreeing that significant effort and thoroughness should be recognized regardless of style. The meeting concluded with a toast celebrating the dedication and scholarly labor of the yeshiva students whose work is now preserved in this important annual publication.

The "Talmudo Beyado" event, held in Beit Shemesh, also honored the authors of the selected essays, highlighting the high level of Torah scholarship and writing skills among the new generation of yeshiva students.
