The story · English

Motty Babchik, a prominent figure in the Gur Hasidic and Agudat Yisrael communities, recently met with senior rabbis opposed to IDF conscription to discuss forming a new Haredi political party. Reported by Channel 13, this emerging party, tentatively named "Black Flag," aims to restore the exemption from military service for yeshiva students under the "Torato Umanuto" arrangement without sanctions. The initiative involves rabbis and yeshiva heads from various Haredi streams, including Hasidic, Lithuanian, and Sephardic groups, who seek to establish rabbinic rather than political leadership. The party's candidates are expected to be rabbis rather than political activists or politicians. Internal surveys conducted by the organizers indicate a potential voter base of tens of thousands, including young Haredim and those who have left the community, signaling significant support. If established, this party could disrupt the existing balance of power within Haredi politics and pose a serious challenge to the dominant Shas and United Torah Judaism parties in the upcoming elections.
