Night Heron Predates Young Little Grebe in Jerusalem's Deer Valley Park

The story · English

On Saturday, nature photographer Dudu Ben Or witnessed a distressing scene at the Deer Valley Park in Jerusalem. While photographing water birds, he observed five young little grebes swimming peacefully in a pond within the park, which is fenced to protect wildlife from predators. Suddenly, a night heron appeared and swiftly caught one of the grebe chicks in its beak. The mother grebe attempted to defend her chick but was no match for the heron. The heron eventually flew away with the chick still in its grasp.

Ben Or described the incident as a harsh reminder of nature's laws, where the strong survive and the weak perish if unprotected. The little grebe species began nesting in the park in 2018, attracted by the water system's seasonal use. Amir Balban, head of urban nature at the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, explained that the peak nesting season is in May, but survival rates are low due to predation by night herons. Only about five out of twenty chicks survive each season because night herons prey on birds, reptiles, small mammals, and amphibians.

The increase in night heron populations, linked to the growth of fish farming since Israel's founding, has negatively impacted the rare little grebes and other waterfowl. The Society for the Protection of Nature is working to reduce night heron numbers by limiting food sources and nesting sites in urban areas. The Deer Valley Park, a 250-dunam urban nature reserve in central Jerusalem, is managed by the Society and was established after public opposition to residential development on the site.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges in balancing urban wildlife conservation with natural predator-prey dynamics in Jerusalem's protected green spaces.
