Nearly two years after the first ceasefire along Israel's northern border, only about 40% of Kiryat Shmona's residents have returned to the city. The city, which endured repeated conflicts and prolonged evacuations, remains a critical test case for the Israeli government's ability to rehabilitate war-affected areas. Political party leaders have recently visited Kiryat Shmona ahead of upcoming elections, aware that the government's failure to restore the city reflects a broader national crisis.

In the 2022 elections, the Likud party secured nearly half the votes in Kiryat Shmona, followed by Religious Zionism and Shas, with opposition parties receiving less than a quarter of the vote. Despite this, local elections saw the city elect a mayor outside the Likud camp, and government ministers have largely avoided the city during its most difficult times. This has fueled speculation that Kiryat Shmona voters might change their traditional patterns in the upcoming elections, though the Likud and Shas bases remain strong.

The city's education sector highlights the ongoing demographic challenges, with over 350 students leaving recently after returning post-evacuation, while about 100 new students have enrolled due to a wave of ideologically motivated settlement. Residents express mixed feelings about political loyalty and government responsibility. Longtime Likud supporter Eli Abergil attributes the city's damage to the war rather than the government, expressing hope for improvement after the elections. Conversely, others like former city engineer David Talvitz and lifelong resident David Avraham criticize the government for neglect and give it a failing grade.

Despite recent government funding commitments for Kiryat Shmona's recovery, tangible improvements are expected only in the long term. Many residents remain skeptical, with some considering alternative political options such as supporting Benny Gantz, who is familiar with northern Israel's needs. The upcoming elections may also provide a clearer picture of the city's current population, which remains uncertain due to ongoing migration and displacement.
