Four Processed Foods That Can Help Lower Cholesterol Levels

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

Contrary to common belief, not all processed foods are unhealthy, and some can actually aid in lowering cholesterol. Nutrition experts highlight four processed food options that provide beneficial nutrients such as soluble fiber, plant proteins, and unsaturated fats, which contribute to healthier cholesterol levels.

Canned beans are an affordable, convenient source of soluble fiber that forms a gel in the digestive system, helping to remove cholesterol from the body. Regular yogurt, including full-fat varieties, has a complex nutritional profile and may have a neutral effect on cholesterol, challenging previous recommendations favoring low-fat dairy.

Tofu, rich in soy protein, has been recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its heart health benefits. Consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily as part of a low saturated fat and cholesterol diet can reduce LDL cholesterol by 3 to 4 percent. Replacing high-fat meats with tofu can lower saturated fat intake and increase fiber consumption.

Foods fortified with plant sterols, such as certain breakfast cereals, margarines, yogurts, and drinks, can also help manage cholesterol. Plant sterols compete with cholesterol for absorption in the intestines, reducing the amount entering the bloodstream. Daily intake of 1.5 to 3 grams of plant sterols may lower LDL cholesterol by 7 to 12 percent, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.

These findings suggest that incorporating specific processed foods into the diet can be a practical and effective strategy for cholesterol management, offering accessible options for those with high cholesterol levels.
