Hamas Attempts Mediation Between Houthis and Yemeni Forces Amid Escalating Conflict

The ongoing conflict between the Houthi movement and Yemeni government forces has seen a rare attempt at mediation by Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist organization based nearly 2,000 kilometers away in the Gaza Strip. According to reports from the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, affiliated with Hezbollah, the Yemeni political party Al-Islah, linked to the Muslim Brotherhood and part of Yemen's parliament and military forces, initiated several mediation efforts with the Houthis. Hamas was chosen as the primary mediator due to its ideological ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and its strengthened relations with Iranian-backed groups, including the Houthis.

Despite these efforts, Hamas's mediation did not succeed. Sources within the Houthi leadership in Sanaa indicated that while a decision to escalate the conflict had not yet been finalized, it was still a possibility. The fighting has intensified around the city of Marib, east of Sanaa, which is controlled by Al-Islah. The party fears a major Houthi offensive could soon capture the city after several smaller clashes.

The mediation news comes amid broader escalations across Yemen, including increased attacks by Houthi forces against Saudi-backed government positions. A recent drone strike by the Houthis targeted government forces in the Hajarimah area of southeastern Yemen, killing two and injuring 15. The conflict continues to involve multiple actors, including Iranian-backed militias, complicating prospects for peace in the region.
