Climate Change Drives More Intense and Widespread Wildfires Worldwide

This summer has seen significant wildfires spreading across the globe, including massive fires in Spain and France in mid-July, and thousands evacuated in British Columbia, Canada, and the northwestern United States. While wildfires have always occurred, recent heatwaves in Europe highlight how climate change is intensifying these events. A recent study published in Nature Communications reveals a global reorganization of wildfire regimes, with more areas at risk, larger and more destructive fires, and longer, more intense fire seasons.

The study notes that although total burned areas have decreased in recent decades, especially in tropical regions, rising temperatures and altered rainfall patterns create conditions that facilitate wildfire development and spread. Dr. Avner Gross, head of the Climate Change Research Laboratory at Ben-Gurion University and member of the Climate Scientists Forum, explains that northern forests in Siberia, Alaska, Canada, and northern Europe are experiencing longer dry periods and higher temperatures, leading to increasingly intense wildfires.

The research combines climate, vegetation, atmospheric CO2 levels, and human activity models, showing that climate change causes drier conditions and more combustible material, increasing the likelihood of intense fires. Human activities like agriculture and urban development can reduce total burned areas, but as the climate warms, these effects diminish, making climate the dominant factor in wildfire extent. Under moderate warming scenarios, wildfire changes are significant but limited, whereas high warming scenarios predict vast increases in at-risk areas that human efforts cannot offset.

For Israel, the findings imply heightened vulnerability rather than a simple rise in fire numbers. Israel lies within a climate change "hotspot," where drying and warming trends increase fire risk. Dr. Gross warns that this trend will likely continue, with wildfires releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere, fueling further warming and creating a feedback loop. Additionally, wildfire ash may spread over larger areas, worsening air pollution and health impacts.

While wildfires are natural phenomena, the study confirms that climate change substantially influences their frequency, intensity, and geographic spread. Mitigating these effects depends heavily on global efforts to prevent or reduce the climate crisis.
