IDF Veteran With PTSD Asked to Leave McDonald's Over Service Dog Allergy Complaint

The story · English

Aviv Levi, an IDF disabled veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), was asked to leave a McDonald's branch at Gan Shmuel Junction while accompanied by his service dog. Aviv had arrived with his family on a busy Monday evening, placed an order, and sat down without issue. After some time, a staff member approached and told him he had to leave due to a customer’s allergy to dogs. Despite Aviv showing official documentation proving the dog was a service animal, the staff insisted he leave, citing the allergy complaint as directed by the branch manager.

Levi, who rarely visits crowded places due to his condition, described the service dog as essential for coping with noise and stress, comparing it to a wheelchair. The incident left him distressed and reluctant to go out with his dog again. He noted this was not the first time he faced such discrimination at this location but decided to speak out this time. His lawyer sent a formal warning letter to McDonald's Israel demanding compensation of 50,000 shekels and an apology, citing violation of the Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law.

McDonald's Israel apologized, calling the staff’s decision a mistake that contradicted company policy welcoming service dogs. They explained the staff acted on a customer allergy complaint but have since reinforced guidelines to prevent recurrence. Advocates for veterans with PTSD emphasized that service dogs are vital aids, not pets or luxuries, and veterans should not face barriers or humiliation when accessing public spaces with their dogs.
