Experts Advise How to Restore Skin After Sun, Salt, and Wind Exposure at the Beach

The story · English

Spending a day at the beach exposes skin to UV radiation, saltwater, wind, and heat, which can cause redness, dryness, irritation, and long-term damage. Skin care expert Paula Balik Dayan explains that even with sunscreen and shade, the skin loses moisture and its natural protective barrier is compromised. To aid recovery, she recommends rinsing the face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser immediately after returning home to remove salt, sand, sweat, and sunscreen residues without damaging the skin barrier.

Following cleansing, applying a hydrating serum and moisturizer containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or glycerin helps restore moisture. It is advised to avoid strong active ingredients such as retinol, acids, or scrubs on the same evening since sun-exposed skin is more sensitive. Instead, soothing products with aloe vera, panthenol, or niacinamide should be used.

Redness should not be ignored as it may indicate skin damage rather than a healthy tan. For burning or sensitive areas, cold compresses and calming creams are recommended, and severe sunburn with blisters or pain warrants medical consultation. Maintaining hydration by drinking plenty of fluids and consuming antioxidant-rich foods like watermelon, berries, tomatoes, and green vegetables supports skin recovery.

The skin continues inflammatory processes after sun exposure, so aggressive treatments should be avoided for 24 hours. Additional precautions include not scrubbing the face harshly, avoiding hot water, not popping blisters, and refraining from further sun exposure if the skin remains red or irritated. Proper post-beach skin care is essential to minimize cumulative sun damage and maintain healthy skin over time.
