Apple Settles for $150,000 Over Jewish Employee’s Sabbath Accommodation Dispute

The story · English

Apple has agreed to pay $150,000 in a settlement with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) following a lawsuit alleging religious discrimination against a Jewish employee. The employee requested a work schedule adjustment to observe the Sabbath by not working on weekends, but his direct manager allegedly opposed the request, subjected him to a hostile work environment, and ultimately terminated his employment. The EEOC investigated and found merit in the claims, concluding that Apple failed to reasonably accommodate the employee’s religious needs as required by U.S. law.

As part of the settlement, Apple committed not only to the financial compensation but also to implementing new training and policies to prevent similar incidents in the future. This case highlights the legal obligation of employers to accommodate religious practices unless it causes undue hardship. The dispute adds to recent legal challenges Apple has faced, including a $250 million settlement over misleading AI advertising and controversies regarding app removals from its store.

The case resonates strongly with Israel’s religious-national community, where Sabbath observance in the workplace, especially in multinational companies, is a common challenge. Apple has yet to issue an official statement on the settlement, but its agreement to enhance training and procedures signals a willingness to address and prevent future religious discrimination claims.
