Israel Needs a Dedicated Minister to Lead Its High-Tech Industry

The story · English

Israel has long been proud of its status as a "Start-Up Nation," with its high-tech sector serving as a key strategic asset driving growth, exports, quality employment, innovation, and state revenues. Recent successful exits and sales in the Israeli high-tech industry have injected significant capital into the economy. However, there is a disconnect between the sector's importance and the government's management of it. Currently, although there is a Minister of Science and Technology, no single minister holds the comprehensive authority needed to lead a unified policy for Israel's high-tech industry. Critical powers and decisions are scattered across various ministries, with different ministers handling taxation, regulation, innovation promotion, and economic foreign relations separately.

The next government should appoint a Minister of Technology and High-Tech with real power and authority. A recent decision to reallocate approximately 850 million shekels, originally intended for Intel's factory investment, to defense budget needs highlights this issue. Without a dedicated minister to represent the long-term interests of the high-tech sector, such strategic investments risk being diverted. This role would not require creating a large new ministry but rather a coordinating figure who oversees the full picture and evaluates government decisions based on their impact on Israel's global technological competitiveness.

The global competition for companies, entrepreneurs, investors, and talent is intensifying, while Israeli firms face geopolitical uncertainty, currency fluctuations, rising living costs, and rapid technological changes, especially the AI revolution. Israel's high-tech success is not guaranteed for future decades despite decades of development by top minds. Appointing a minister with real authority is crucial for Israel's economic resilience. Political parties must clarify how they will remove unnecessary barriers and regulations, invest in technological education from an early age, encourage investments, strengthen Israeli companies expanding globally, and prevent short-term decisions that harm long-term competitiveness.

The Israeli high-tech sector is a central engine of the economy and a national asset. To maintain its leadership in the coming decade, it needs more than praise and slogans; it requires a Minister of Technology and High-Tech empowered to fight for the industry's future. This call was made by Avi Traub, director of the Israeli High-Tech Association at the Manufacturers Association of Israel.
