Tiberias Municipality Fines 320 NIS for Illegal Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

The story · English

The Tiberias Municipality issued a stern warning to residents on Tuesday regarding the illegal installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in public spaces. This crackdown follows the discovery of a makeshift charging station mounted on a tree trunk in one of the city’s streets, accompanied by a sign declaring it a private charging point. The municipality highlighted the dangers posed by the practice, including electrical cables stretched across sidewalks from private homes, which endanger pedestrians and obstruct passage.

The municipality clarified that placing charging stations in public areas for private use or running cables from private residences into public spaces violates the law. Violators face fines of 320 NIS, with daily fines applicable for ongoing offenses. Authorities have demanded the immediate removal of these hazards and announced continuous enforcement actions by the municipal inspection department.

This issue is not unique to Tiberias; many Israeli cities face similar challenges as the surge in electric vehicle ownership outpaces the development of public charging infrastructure. Many residents live in older buildings without private parking, limiting their ability to install legal home charging stations. Economic incentives also drive drivers to seek direct connections to household outlets, as home charging is significantly cheaper, up to two or three times less costly, and better for battery health compared to fast public chargers.

The municipality’s statement aims to balance public safety concerns with the growing demand for EV charging, emphasizing the need for proper infrastructure expansion and legal compliance.
