Professor Yoram Harpaz Advocates Shift From Teaching to Learning in Israeli Education Reform

The story · English

Professor Yoram Harpaz, with decades of experience in educational research and practice, calls for a fundamental transformation in Israel's education system from a teacher-centered model to a learner-centered approach. Drawing on his background from teaching at Boyar School, managing projects at the Branco Weiss Institute, and founding the Center for Educational Environment Planning at Beit Berl College, Harpaz emphasizes the need to rethink education beyond intuitive and superficial views, considering the hidden forces shaping learning environments.

Harpaz highlights that the quality of education is inherently linked to the quality of society, noting that formal education is influenced by family, peer groups, and technological-cultural environments. He critiques the traditional school structure, designed primarily for managing large classes from the teacher's perspective, which leads to ineffective passive learning, negative experiences, and disciplinary challenges in Israeli classrooms.

To foster effective learning in the knowledge economy era, Harpaz proposes principles such as increasing student autonomy in choosing study paths, accommodating diverse intelligences beyond IQ, promoting active learning through inquiry and problem-solving, and creating cognitive challenges paired with responsive teaching. He envisions an innovative blended learning model combining human teachers, peer learning within the Zone of Proximal Development, and artificial intelligence tutors that personalize learning paths based on real-time diagnostics.

For systemic change, Harpaz suggests a dual strategy: immediate stabilization of the current system by reducing simultaneous subjects and expanding choice, alongside long-term innovation through a national think tank and experimental "laboratory schools". These pilot schools would implement the new model fully, with gradual scaling from five to fifty, then five hundred, and eventually nationwide. Harpaz expresses optimism that Israel, leveraging its proven capacity for innovation, can become a global leader in educational innovation, dubbing this vision "Education as Startup Nation."
