US Military Fires on Ship Attempting to Break Iran Naval Blockade in Gulf of Oman

The story · English

On the morning of August 11, 2026, US military forces fired upon the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova in the Gulf of Oman, approximately 114 kilometers off the coast of Pakistan, after it attempted to breach the US-imposed naval blockade on Iranian ports. According to a US source cited by The Wall Street Journal, a US military helicopter launched a missile at the ship's rudder after the crew ignored explicit warnings from US forces enforcing the blockade. The missile strike caused a fire on the ship's deck, which was subsequently extinguished. All 17 crew members were accounted for with no reported injuries. Following the attack, the ship appeared to attempt transferring its crew to another civilian vessel.

The incident marks a further escalation in the Trump administration's efforts to tighten economic pressure on Iran by enforcing the maritime blockade. In June, three Indian sailors were killed during a similar US operation, the first fatalities reported in this campaign. US President Donald Trump responded to Iranian demands for compensation over recent hostilities by demanding reparations from Iran for the deaths and injuries caused by the Iranian regime over the years, including victims of roadside bombs, the USS Cole attack, and protesters killed over the past five decades. Trump instructed US negotiators to include these compensation demands explicitly in any future talks with Iran.

This event underscores the heightened tensions in the region as the US intensifies its campaign to restrict Iran's economic activities and military capabilities through naval enforcement measures.
