Israeli Fire Commissioner Criticizes Authorities for Inadequate Wildfire Preparedness Amid Rising Fires

Israel Fire and Rescue Commissioner Major General Eyal Caspi addressed the ongoing wave of wildfires across the country in a radio interview on Tuesday. He reported a nearly 10% increase in the number of fires since the start of the season, with fires lasting longer than in previous years. Caspi criticized the lack of full cooperation and preparedness from the Jewish National Fund (KKL) and local authorities, attributing this to the current security situation which has impaired their ability to protect open spaces and forests from fires. He stated that these bodies have not completed all necessary preparations to prevent fires.

Despite these shortcomings, Caspi acknowledged that responsible leaders within these organizations recognize the gaps and that the Fire and Rescue Service is working daily with them to improve readiness and safety. He emphasized the scarcity of green spaces in Israel and the importance of protecting them.

With heatwaves expected in the coming days, Caspi reminded the public that a commissioner’s order banning open fires is in effect until the end of the month. Barbecues are only permitted in designated forest areas approved by KKL or the Nature and Parks Authority. Violating these rules, including unauthorized welding or grinding work that could spark fires, constitutes a criminal offense. Caspi urged citizens to avoid unnecessary fire-related activities and to coordinate with fire authorities when essential, stressing that prevention is the key to avoiding large-scale fires.

In related developments, a fire near Ben Shemen was contained, and major highways 1 and 6 have reopened. Additionally, two Palestinians were arrested on suspicion of causing fires near the Gilad Farm settlement.
