Corrective Discrimination in Israeli Medical Education Marginalizes Jewish Students

The story · English

Dana Ron, a media personality and columnist on Channel 14, criticized the policy of "corrective discrimination" in Israeli medical school admissions, arguing it unfairly disadvantages outstanding Jewish students. She contends that the policy, intended to promote equality by giving preference based on ethnic sector, actually perpetuates condescension toward Arab applicants by implying they cannot succeed on merit alone.

Ron highlights that Jewish students who excel academically, serve in the military, and achieve high psychometric scores often find themselves excluded from Israeli medical programs due to these sector-based quotas. As a result, many are forced to study medicine abroad, incurring significant financial and emotional costs, while Arab students benefit from preferential admission and subsidized education funded by taxpayers.

She questions the justice of this system, emphasizing that medicine should be based solely on excellence, knowledge, and ability rather than political or ethnic quotas. Ron calls for ending this sector-based discrimination against Jewish students and restoring meritocracy in higher education admissions. She warns that the current policy damages both the students affected and the integrity of the education system.
