Israeli Study Finds Resistance to Change Undermines Mental Resilience During War

A new Israeli study, ongoing since before October 7, 2023, reveals that individuals who prefer to avoid change and cling to the status quo experience greater anxiety, negative emotions, and a significant decline in mental well-being and sense of meaning during prolonged crises. The research began in December 2022 with 1,423 Israelis aged 25 to 66, who completed questionnaires measuring their tendency to favor the current state even when dissatisfied, a psychological phenomenon known as status quo bias.

Following the outbreak of the war on October 7, researchers reassessed the same participants during the initial weeks of fighting and again after more than a year of conflict. Early findings showed a 46% increase in negative emotions within the first six weeks. Over time, those with higher pre-war status quo bias reported not only elevated anxiety and fear but also a marked drop in overall mental health and life meaning.

The study identified that individuals with strong status quo bias invested less effort in improving aspects of their lives such as health, work, relationships, and leisure during the war. This reduced effort largely explained their sustained mental health decline. Conversely, participants who actively worked to enhance these areas maintained higher levels of mental resilience despite the ongoing conflict.

The link between status quo bias and mental health deterioration was especially pronounced among those whose personal lives were significantly impacted by the war. Researchers suggest these insights extend beyond wartime, offering a better understanding of coping mechanisms in personal, health, and economic crises.

Professor Tal Shavit of Ariel University emphasized that mental resilience depends not only on external circumstances but also on individuals' responses. "Those who choose to act, adapt, and improve their situation cope better with prolonged crises. Our findings show that resisting change when dissatisfied can harm coping ability, especially when adaptability is crucial," Shavit concluded.
