Smart Places to Hide a Spare House Key Beyond the Usual Spots

מאת מערכת עיצוב הבית

The story · English

A spare house key can be a lifesaver if you get locked out, but where you hide it is just as important as having one. Common hiding spots like under the doormat or inside a flowerpot near the door are well-known to burglars and should be avoided. Other frequently checked places include fake garden stones, above the door frame, under window sills or outdoor furniture, and inside the electrical cabinet, all of which are predictable and easily discovered.

Experts advise against hiding keys under cars, inside mailboxes, or in any visible outdoor location. Keys should never be left with identifying tags that link them to the home. Instead, the safest option is to leave the key with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member living nearby. Another secure method is using a lockbox with a code, placed discreetly away from the front door.

For those who prefer to hide a key outdoors, it’s better to think beyond classic spots. Consider placing it under a heavy, immovable garden fixture, inside a removable brick or stone in a wall, or near less obvious places like a gutter, drainage pipe, or vent cover, ensuring the key is protected from weather and securely fastened. Homes with dogs can use the doghouse area as a natural, less conspicuous hiding spot, though this should not be relied on solely for security.

Smart locks can eliminate the need for a spare key altogether, but if a physical key is necessary, having a locksmith or emergency contact who holds a key is another option. The key takeaway is to choose a hiding place that is accessible to you but unpredictable and difficult for others to find.
