Smart Places to Hide a Spare House Key Beyond the Usual Spots

מאת מערכת עיצוב הבית

The story · English

A spare house key can be a lifesaver if you get locked out, but where you hide it is crucial. Common hiding spots like under the doormat, inside or beneath a flowerpot near the door, or in a fake garden stone are well-known to burglars and should be avoided. Other typical places to steer clear of include above the door frame, under the window sill or outdoor furniture, and inside the electrical cabinet, as these are easy to check and not truly secure.

Experts advise against hiding keys under the car, inside the mailbox, or anywhere too visible in the yard. Keys should never be left with any identifying tags that link them to the house, as this increases the risk if lost or stolen. Instead, the safest option is to leave the key with a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member living nearby.

If you must hide a key outside, consider a lockbox with a code placed in an inconspicuous location away from the front door. Other less obvious hiding spots include under heavy garden furniture, behind removable bricks or stones in a wall, or near a doghouse, which naturally deters strangers. Some homeowners use places like gutters, drainage pipes, or dryer vent covers, but these expose the key to weather and dirt, so the key must be secured tightly.

For homes with smart locks, a spare key may not be necessary. Alternatively, having a locksmith or emergency service contact or a nearby trusted person who holds a key can be a practical solution. The article emphasizes that a good hiding place should be accessible to the homeowner but unpredictable and difficult for others to find.
