Israeli Fire Official Reveals All Wildfires Are Human-Caused, Urges Safety Measures

Dr. Shay Levy, Deputy Fire Chief and Head of Open Areas Research at the Israeli Fire and Rescue Services, dispels the common myth that wildfires in Israel start spontaneously from natural causes like sun rays or glass focusing heat. He clarifies that while natural fires caused by lightning are rare globally, in Israel all wildfires are caused by human actions, either intentionally or through negligence.

Levy highlights common ignition sources such as discarded cigarette butts, unattended embers from picnics, and flammable waste left in dry, windy conditions. Due to extreme heat and dry weather, the Fire Commissioner has issued a nationwide ban on lighting fires in open areas to prevent disasters similar to recent deadly wildfires in Europe.

The interview also addresses the increased risk of electrical fires during the summer, caused by heavy use of air conditioners and unsafe electrical practices like overloading sockets and using uncertified chargers. A recent major fire in a parking lot in Petah Tikva required extensive firefighting efforts.

Levy stresses that the deadliest threat in home fires is not flames but toxic smoke, which can incapacitate residents silently. He strongly recommends installing smoke detectors in every room and having a dry fire extinguisher at home. Clearing dry vegetation around homes is also advised to reduce fire risk and deter pests.

Regarding outdoor activities during the summer holidays, Levy urges personal responsibility, including proper hydration, route planning, and adherence to fire regulations. Barbecuing is only allowed in designated areas with approved equipment. In case of spotting a fire, people should immediately call the fire emergency number 102 and evacuate the area rather than attempting to extinguish the fire themselves.
