Israeli Banks Target Children with Financial Products Amid Calls for Independent Financial Education

The story · English

Israeli banks, credit card companies, and payment apps have recently launched various financial products aimed at children, including digital wallets, prepaid cards, savings plans, and educational content. These initiatives target children as young as eight years old, with platforms and apps designed to teach them money management. While this development appears positive, raising financial literacy from an early age, concerns arise about who is delivering this education and the underlying financial perspectives promoted.

Historically, Israel's traditional financial system has not revolutionized financial literacy, often benefiting from consumers taking loans, using credit, and keeping money in low-yield bank products without fully understanding alternatives. Banks have rarely encouraged long-term investment education or awareness of inflation's impact, instead frequently promoting loans and credit lines. The core issue is that banks both sell financial products and position themselves as educators, creating a conflict of interest.

Meanwhile, a grassroots financial revolution is underway in Israel, with young people learning about investments and money management through social media, podcasts, and independent communities. This growing public awareness demands genuine, broad, and independent financial education that teaches children to think critically about budgeting, saving, investing, risk, returns, inflation, and compound interest. Children should understand that banks are service providers with economic interests, not ultimate financial authorities.

While banks can develop and compete with products for children, experts warn against allowing them to control the financial education of the next generation. The public is becoming more financially literate and critical, and it is crucial to ensure children advance beyond simply learning which bank product to buy. Adva Hankin, an insurance agent and financial planner, emphasizes the need for independent financial education that empowers children to make informed decisions rather than follow bank-driven agendas.
