Israel's Largest Lizard Rescued and Rehabilitated After Falling Into Water Pit Near Eshkol

מאת חני לוין

The story · English

A large gray monitor lizard, the biggest lizard species in Israel, was successfully rescued from a water pit near Eshkol in southern Israel. The reptile was found trapped in the pit by reptile expert Aviad Bar and immediately transferred to the Safari Wildlife Hospital, operated by the Safari and Israel Nature and Parks Authority, for urgent care. Upon arrival, the lizard was severely emaciated, had mouth wounds, and an empty digestive system, indicating it had been trapped without food for an extended period.

The hospital highlighted that ancient water pits and open infrastructure shafts in open areas pose deadly traps for many animals, especially reptiles that cannot escape on their own. After receiving medical treatment and controlled feeding, the lizard is recovering and regaining strength. It is expected to be released back into its natural habitat in the coming days.
