Scientists Reveal Benefits of Short Midday Sun Exposure for Health

The story · English

For decades, health authorities have urged people to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen constantly to prevent skin cancer. However, recent scientific findings challenge this approach, highlighting that brief, controlled daily exposure to midday sunlight is essential for cardiovascular health, mood regulation, and immune function.

Historically, sunbathing was once considered a symbol of health and fashion, popularized by Coco Chanel in the 1920s, and even used therapeutically by doctors. Yet, over the past 50 years, rising skin cancer rates led medical institutions to recommend near-total sun avoidance and heavy sunscreen use. New research now indicates that complete sun avoidance may cause significant health risks.

Sunlight triggers the release of substances in the blood that dilate blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. A 20-year Swedish study found women who avoided sun exposure had double the mortality rate compared to those who received regular sunlight. Additionally, sunlight increases serotonin levels in the brain, improving mood, concentration, and sleep quality. It also enables the body to produce vitamin D, crucial for bone health, muscle strength, and immune defense.

Experts emphasize the importance of balance: short sun exposure of a few minutes during midday, with small skin areas like hands or legs uncovered, is optimal since vitamin D synthesis peaks then. The required exposure time varies by skin tone; lighter skin needs only a few minutes, while darker skin requires longer due to melanin's natural filtering effect. After this brief exposure, standard sun protection measures, wearing hats, covering skin, or applying sunscreen, should be resumed to prevent burns and skin cancer.

Countries like Australia and New Zealand have updated their official guidelines to reflect this nuanced understanding, treating sunlight as a beneficial medicine in small doses but harmful in excess. The new message is clear: do not fear the sun, but avoid prolonged exposure. A few minutes of midday sunlight daily, with eye protection, is a simple, cost-effective way to boost energy, mood, and heart health without increasing skin cancer risk.
