The story · English

Tzomet Sfarim, a major Israeli bookstore chain, is changing its policy regarding the acceptance of new book titles, particularly those funded by authors themselves. In a letter sent to publishers, CEO Avi Shomer announced that starting next quarter, the chain will reduce the number of self-funded books it accepts. This move aims to streamline operations and enhance the shopping experience for customers.

The decision comes amid a sharp rise in "self-funded literature," where books are published without professional editorial oversight. Shomer noted this trend creates significant challenges in managing shelf space and diminishes the ability to present a high-quality and commercially viable selection. Publishers will now be required to submit books for review by purchasing managers, who will approve titles based on target audience fit, commercial potential, and overall visibility.

Shomer highlighted the economic burden of stocking large volumes of self-funded books that do not meet customer demand, leading to costly returns, storage, and logistical issues that often outweigh profits. Limited shelf space in stores also means that irrelevant titles reduce exposure and sales of leading books. By reducing excess variety, the chain hopes to allow store managers to focus resources on sales and customer service rather than handling unsold inventory.

Shomer concluded by expressing confidence that this policy will strengthen the status of books, improve sales performance of quality titles, and maintain a precise and satisfying shopping experience for customers. Industry estimates indicate that by 2025, at least half of published books will be partially or fully self-funded, a stark contrast to a decade ago when such books were not marketed in major chains.
