Second Season of Israeli Romance Series 'When the Waves Rise' Returns but Fails to Impress

The second season of the Israeli romantic series "When the Waves Rise" premiered with high expectations following the success of its first season, but it struggles to capture the audience's interest. Directed by Shira Greenshpon, the new season diverges from the original book series by skipping ahead to the fourth book and focusing on the popular romantic trope of "the best friend's younger sister."

Tomer Cohen, a model and former boyfriend of Israeli pop star Noa Kirel, takes on the lead role of Almog Elbaz, a confident and sought-after bachelor. Despite the casting choice aimed at attracting viewers, Cohen's limited acting experience is evident, resulting in flat performances and a lack of chemistry between characters. This undermines the show's romantic appeal.

Beyond acting, the series suffers from production issues including excessive writing, abrupt scene cuts, unflattering lighting, and awkward editing that detracts from the viewing experience. These flaws persist despite the show's short episode lengths and micro-drama format, which demand tight storytelling and engaging visuals.

Although "When the Waves Rise" has established a dedicated audience and tapped into Israeli viewers' appetite for romance on television, its quality remains questionable. The new season continues to grapple with the same problems as its predecessor, leaving it uncertain whether it can become a worthy successor to other popular Israeli series like "Here Comes the Fuss, Karkal."
