A recent security study has revealed that millions of inexpensive GPS watches marketed for children are highly vulnerable to hacking. These devices, often purchased by parents for under $50 from online retailers like Amazon, promise features such as touchscreens and video calls but conceal serious privacy risks. Hackers can easily exploit software and server vulnerabilities to track children’s real-time locations, remotely activate the watch’s camera, listen to surrounding sounds, and even alter emergency contact numbers.
The root of the problem lies in many companies using the same insecure software infrastructures, exposing users to significant dangers. This issue extends beyond GPS watches to include other low-cost smart home devices like security cameras, smart doorbells, and baby monitors, many produced by anonymous manufacturers with minimal security measures. Previous research has shown that hackers can breach smart doorbells to spy inside homes and access stored images on company servers without difficulty.
To protect families, experts advise avoiding devices from unknown brands with random names and not relying solely on online reviews. Securing home Wi-Fi networks with strong passwords and regularly updating software is also crucial.
