Summer Break Risks: Guide for Parents When Teens Face Criminal Charges

מאת בשיתוף עו"ד גיא ארנברג

The story · English

As summer vacation begins, the increased free time and lack of structured supervision can lead some teenagers to make poor decisions that result in criminal charges. Common offenses during the summer include underage alcohol and drug use, violent altercations often linked to intoxication, vandalism, traffic violations such as unlicensed driving or offenses involving electric scooters, and increasingly, digital crimes like cyberbullying and sharing illegal content on social media platforms. Parents are often unaware that seemingly harmless online posts can lead to police investigations and criminal records.

Israeli law distinguishes between minors under and over 12 years old regarding arrest procedures. Children under 12 are generally not subject to arrest except under strict conditions, while those over 12 have specific protections, including mandatory parental notification and rights during police questioning. Juvenile courts focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment, but the outcome heavily depends on proper handling from the outset.

If a child is arrested, parents should immediately ensure the minor’s right to legal counsel before any police interrogation, as statements made without advice can be used as evidence against them. A new law passed in late July 2026 will soon allow lawyers to be present during questioning, but it is not yet in effect. Parental presence during interrogation is recommended but can be denied by police officers.

Early involvement of a criminal defense attorney specializing in juvenile cases can often prevent formal charges by negotiating alternatives such as mediation, conditional agreements, or case dismissal due to lack of public interest. Even minor convictions can affect a youth’s military service classification, eligibility for combat or intelligence units, and future academic or employment opportunities, especially in sensitive or public service roles.

Parents who receive a call from the police about their child should act quickly to secure legal representation to protect their child’s rights and future. Attorney Guy Aranberg, who specializes in juvenile criminal law, advises immediate legal consultation to navigate these complex situations effectively.
