The story · English

In a recent interview with The New Yorker podcast, a co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) expressed a sharply critical stance toward Israel and described the October 7 attacks as "largely inevitable." She argued that the prolonged deprivation of basic rights and dignity to Palestinians living under harsh conditions made rebellion unavoidable. When questioned about her support for a DSA candidate who participated in a pro-Hamas rally on October 8, just one day after the attacks, she admitted she likely would have joined the protest if she had been in New York at the time.

The DSA leader called for a "free Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital," endorsing a one-state solution. She also blamed Israel for the deaths of many LGBTQ Palestinians in Gaza, stating that while Hamas is not LGBTQ-friendly, most LGBTQ casualties were caused by Israeli bombs. On domestic issues, she outlined the DSA’s vision of democratic socialism, emphasizing worker control over workplaces, housing, and essential industries like energy and water. She advocated for the complete abolition of prisons and drastic cuts to police budgets, proposing to reallocate funds to social services, schools, and after-school programs.

Regarding wealth, she supported heavy taxation of the rich, arguing that billionaires amassed wealth by exploiting workers. She also praised Cuba’s regime as a model and criticized Western countries for their role in the Ukraine crisis. The interview has sparked significant controversy within the American left, highlighting deep divisions over Israel and broader social policies. The DSA continues to promote its agenda through grassroots engagement and democratic decision-making within its ranks.
