Baal Shem Tov Resolves Young Couple’s Wedding Crisis with Joy and Blessing

מאת ורד שאלתיאל

The story · English

The Baal Shem Tov and his disciples once traveled to a village to attend the wedding of a young couple who were facing financial difficulties. The couple had planned to marry in the village to reduce expenses, as weddings in the city were too costly for them. Upon arrival, the Baal Shem Tov and his followers celebrated with the bride and groom, but when it came time to give the customary gifts, the disciples found no money. Instead, they gave the couple small coins they carried, while the Baal Shem Tov declared his gift to be a house, symbolically blessing them with a home.

After the wedding, the Baal Shem Tov departed, and the couple left the village. On their way, they found a lost young non-Jewish child crying alone in the forest. They took him in, fed him from their wedding leftovers, and later returned him to his parents. The city announced a reward of a house for anyone who returned the child, so the couple received the house promised by the Baal Shem Tov’s blessing.

The article also includes teachings from the Baal Shem Tov about maintaining joy and faith, especially during times of mourning for the destruction of the Temple. It explains the spiritual concept of the Shekhinah (Divine Presence) being in exile, searching for a pure dwelling place within people. The Baal Shem Tov’s parable compares the Shekhinah to a king seeking a humble place to rest during exile, emphasizing the importance of personal holiness and repentance.

Additional reflections from the Zohar and the Or HaChaim are cited, describing the nightly sorrow of God over the Temple’s destruction and the Shekhinah’s exile. The text calls for awakening and spiritual effort to hasten redemption and the rebuilding of the Temple, urging readers to internalize the pain of exile and to strive for divine closeness. The piece concludes with a blessing for health, livelihood, and salvation for all Israel, invoking the coming of the Messiah.
