The story · English

Health authorities in Louisiana, USA, have issued a warning following an unusual increase in severe infections caused by the Vibrio vulnificus bacterium, often called the "flesh-eating bacteria." Since the start of the year, nine cases have been diagnosed in the state, with five fatalities. In all cases, the bacterium entered through wounds exposed to seawater, and all patients had underlying health conditions that increased their risk of severe illness. This mortality rate is notably higher than the average over the past decade, which recorded seven cases and only one death during the same period.

Vibrio vulnificus naturally inhabits warm coastal waters, with concentrations rising from May to October. Infection can occur through open wounds exposed to seawater or brackish water, or by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, especially shellfish. Despite its nickname, the bacterium does not literally consume flesh but can cause rapidly spreading soft tissue infections and necrosis, potentially leading to sepsis, urgent surgery, or limb amputation. According to U.S. health officials, about 20% of infected individuals die, sometimes within one to two days.

The bacterium is also present in Israel, where it is found in seawater, fish farms, and particularly in "Amnon" fish (Mullet). Infection there has been linked to injuries from fish bones during handling. Israel experienced a notable outbreak in 1996-1997 involving a strain called "biotype 3," associated with severe soft tissue infections. In 2022, a fish farmer in the Jordan Valley contracted the bacterium after being pricked by a fish bone, highlighting the risk of even minor wounds.

Israeli health authorities advise purchasing fish from licensed sources and avoiding direct contact with fish for people with chronic illnesses, weakened immune systems, or open wounds. They recommend not entering seawater with open wounds and thoroughly washing any exposed area after contact. Early medical treatment is critical if symptoms such as spreading redness, swelling, pain, or skin color changes appear after exposure.

The warnings come as demand for fish rises around holidays, increasing the risk of exposure. Both U.S. and Israeli health agencies emphasize the importance of awareness and prompt treatment to reduce fatalities from this aggressive bacterium.
