Deadly Vibrio Vulnificus Bacteria Causes Five Deaths After Sea Exposure, Also Present in Israel

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

Five of nine patients in Louisiana died this year after their skin wounds were exposed to seawater contaminated with the aggressive Vibrio vulnificus bacterium. This bacterium, naturally found in warm marine environments, especially from May to October, can infect through even minor cuts or abrasions exposed to seawater or by consuming raw or undercooked seafood, particularly shellfish.

Vibrio vulnificus is also known in Israel, where the Ministry of Health identifies it as naturally present in seawater, coastal areas, and fish farms, especially in fish like the Amnon (tilapia). Infection can occur during fish handling if a fin, bone, or other fish part punctures the skin, allowing the bacterium to enter. Two years ago, an Israeli fish farmer in the Emek HaMaayanot region contracted the bacterium after being pricked by an Amnon fish, highlighting that even seemingly minor injuries can lead to serious infections.

The Israeli Ministry of Health issues special warnings around holidays when fish consumption rises, advising consumers to buy fish from authorized sources and ensure fish are cleaned of fins, scales, and gills. People with chronic illnesses, weakened immune systems, or open wounds are urged to avoid direct contact with fish. The bacterium may reside on fish surfaces or in their aquatic environment, and small wounds during fish cleaning can be dangerous, especially for vulnerable individuals.

Health officials recommend not entering seawater with open wounds and thoroughly washing any exposed area if contact occurs. Symptoms such as expanding redness, swelling, local fever, severe pain, or skin discoloration after exposure require immediate medical attention, with prompt antibiotic treatment and possible surgical removal of infected tissue critical to survival in severe cases.
