Rare Giant Ocean Sunfish Spotted in Eilat Bay Coral Reserve

The story · English

A rare and impressive giant ocean sunfish (Mola mola) was recently observed in the coral reserve of Eilat Bay, surprising marine ecologists and nature officials. Dr. Asaf Zevuloni, an ecologist with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, explained that while the sunfish is widely distributed in tropical and temperate open seas worldwide, it is an uncommon visitor to Eilat Bay, making this sighting near the coral reef particularly special.

The sunfish is easily identifiable by its large, tall, and flattened body with prominent dorsal and anal fins, and despite its awkward appearance, it is an active swimmer capable of long-distance travel and deep dives. The fish feeds on various marine creatures including gelatinous animals, crustaceans, mollusks, and small fish, playing an important role in the open sea ecosystem.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority highlighted that the giant ocean sunfish is currently classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to threats such as bycatch in fishing and other human-related dangers. Attila Sakani, a nature reserve ranger, recounted his excitement upon encountering the 1.7-meter-long sunfish during a snorkel near the southern bridge, emphasizing the importance of protecting the marine environment to preserve such rare species.

Dr. Zevuloni added that this encounter serves as a reminder that the survival of extraordinary marine animals like the sunfish depends on a healthy and well-preserved sea ecosystem. The sighting underscores the ongoing surprises and natural wonders found in Eilat’s waters.
