AI Boom Drives Massive Energy and Water Use, Sparking Local U.S. Protests

Major U.S. tech companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and Oracle are expected to invest over $700 billion in computing infrastructure and artificial intelligence by the end of 2026, nearly doubling their spending from the previous year. These "hyperscalers" operate vast global data center networks with millions of servers, providing cloud services or powering their own AI platforms. Amazon leads the global cloud market with a 28% share, followed by Microsoft at 20% and Google at 15% as of Q2 2026.

However, this rapid expansion comes with significant environmental costs. Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, primarily for cooling. The main bottleneck for these companies is not chip shortages but delays in connecting to power grids and securing transformers. A single data center can use millions of gallons of water daily, much of which evaporates and does not return to local supplies, causing growing tensions with host communities.

In Oregon's The Dalles, Google's data centers consumed about 355 million gallons of water in 2021, nearly one-third of the city's total water use. This information was kept secret until local media forced its release through legal action. Similar concerns have led to local opposition elsewhere; in 2025, Tucson, Arizona's city council rejected a large Amazon data center project following resident protests over anticipated water and electricity consumption.

These conflicts highlight that decisions about data center locations and resource use are increasingly public issues, not just corporate ones. The article suggests that such debates may soon arise in Israel as well, reflecting the global challenge of balancing AI infrastructure growth with environmental sustainability.
