Experts Warn Toothbrush Holders Harbor Harmful Bacteria Without Regular Cleaning

The story · English

Microbiologists highlight that toothbrush holders, often overlooked in bathroom cleaning routines, accumulate bacteria, mold, and fungi due to constant exposure to moisture, saliva residue, and toothpaste. Professor Cindy Gunawan from the University of Technology Sydney describes these holders as some of the least sterile household items, especially in humid or poorly ventilated bathrooms used by multiple people, including children.

To maintain hygiene, experts recommend cleaning toothbrush holders weekly, or more frequently in damp environments. The cleaning process involves removing all items, washing the holder with warm water, dish soap, and a narrow brush, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. For deeper disinfection, soaking the holder in a vinegar-water solution or antibacterial mouthwash is advised. Durable holders can also be sanitized in a dishwasher or boiled.

Stubborn deposits like dried toothpaste or limescale can be removed by scrubbing with a mixture of dish soap and vinegar using a gentle scrubbing pad. Electric toothbrush chargers also require cleaning; they should be unplugged before wiping with a soft cloth dipped in mild soap and water, and disinfected with 70% alcohol wipes. A practical tip includes placing a cotton pad with a small hole over the charger pin to absorb drips and dirt, which can be replaced regularly.

In addition to cleaning holders and chargers, users should rinse toothbrushes thoroughly after use, shake off excess water, and store them upright in open air. Toothbrushes or electric brush heads should be replaced every three months or after illness. Experts also advise wiping frequently touched bathroom surfaces like faucet handles, light switches, and door handles to ensure overall cleanliness.

Incorporating these simple steps into weekly cleaning routines can significantly reduce bacterial buildup, promoting a healthier and more hygienic bathroom environment.
