Ancient Olive Trees Rescued From 2025 Wildfire Reborn as Bonsai in Israel

The story · English

In 2025, a severe wildfire nearly destroyed century-old olive trees at Ilan Park's parking area, leaving foresters convinced the trees were lost. Despite the extensive damage, the trunks' root collars remained alive, prompting the Jewish National Fund (JNF) to attempt a unique restoration process. About 60 charred trunks were removed and transferred to a nursery, where they were placed in a special pumice substrate to maintain moisture and oxygen, reducing rot risks. The trunks were kept in a greenhouse with controlled heat and humidity to encourage rooting.

Bonsai artist Shay Cohen from the Jerusalem Botanical Garden was enlisted to save the trees using specialized techniques. Initially, most foliage was removed to minimize water loss until new roots developed. Within a month, fresh leaves appeared, followed by root growth weeks later. The preserved burnt marks and aged texture are expected to enhance the bonsai's artistic and botanical value.

Rotem Attias, manager of the Eshtaol nursery at JNF, noted the trees' survival despite severe damage and highlighted the precise care enabling new root systems. JNF hopes to cultivate around 20 bonsai trees from these trunks, which will later be displayed at the Jerusalem Botanical Garden and Eshtaol nursery. Dr. Uri Pergman-Spier, scientific director of the botanical garden, emphasized the trees' resilience and renewal power, symbolizing longevity and life beyond human lifespans.
