Israeli ClimateTech Faces Investment Drop Despite Growing Urgency and AI Advances

The story · English

The summer of 2026 is marked by extreme heat and devastating wildfires across Europe, with about 3,000 square kilometers burned in the EU by July 22, double the multi-year average, releasing nearly 10 million tons of CO2. These climate impacts cause severe air pollution, public health issues, agricultural damage, and water shortages, underscoring that the climate crisis is an immediate reality, not a future threat.

In Israel, the ClimateTech sector shows resilience amid war and uncertainty, with 946 active climate companies in 2024, including 49 startups founded since mid-2023. However, investments in this field have sharply declined by 39%, from $1 billion in 2023 to approximately $613 million in 2024, reducing ClimateTech's share of total Israeli high-tech investments from 14.5% to 6.4%. This gap highlights the urgent need for more entrepreneurs and investors to address the scale of the climate challenge.

Experts emphasize that success in ClimateTech depends not only on rapid software development enabled by AI but also on deep understanding of physical-world problems in energy, agriculture, water, and infrastructure. The acquisition of BreezoMeter by Google exemplifies how founders’ intimate knowledge of environmental challenges and market needs drives impact and business success.

AI acts as a powerful tool for climate entrepreneurs, enabling faster product development and market testing with fewer resources. Israeli startups like Organuz and Mettis combine decades of domain expertise with AI to optimize renewable energy systems and translate climate risks into engineering decisions, respectively.

Venture capital firms are urged to adjust their evaluation criteria beyond typical software metrics to include access to unique data, regulatory insight, and trust built in the field. Founders are encouraged to focus on solving significant climate problems, as impactful solutions can also yield strong business results. The climate crisis will persist beyond current conflicts and elections, making the choice of which real-world problems to tackle with AI crucial for future innovation and investment.
