Hezbollah Signals Willingness for Official Talks with Syrian President Assad

The story · English

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem recently indicated openness to holding an official meeting between the militant group and Syria's leadership. This statement came shortly after Syrian President Ahmad al-Assra emphasized the importance of stability in Lebanon and the need for government and Lebanese army monopoly over weapons and decision-making in an interview with Al Jazeera. Qassem highlighted the close connection between the stability of Syria and Lebanon, stating that a stable Syria supports Lebanon and vice versa. He reiterated Hezbollah's position demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Qassem also expressed full support for the Lebanese army's deployment south of the Litani River, promising Hezbollah's maximum assistance, a notable comment amid international and regional pressure to implement security arrangements in the area. Historically, Syria served as a vital logistical and weapons supply route for Hezbollah from Iran. However, since the fall of the Assad regime and the rise of al-Assra's government in Damascus, relations have shifted dramatically.

The new Syrian regime pursues an independent nationalist policy and has engaged in a "quiet war" to reduce Hezbollah's influence within Syria. The Syrian army actively operates along the porous Lebanon border, closing smuggling tunnels and intercepting large shipments of anti-tank missiles, drones, and explosives destined for Hezbollah. Damascus aims to prevent conflict spillover and maintain sovereignty, while Hezbollah faces the loss of its critical supply line. Despite operational estrangement and Hezbollah's concerns about pro-Western shifts or normalization in Syria, both sides have recently signaled some openness to political dialogue driven by emerging regional interests.
